South Wales Evening Post October 30, 2006 Monday HEADLINE: Wife beater fails in sentence appeal A Swansea drug addict jailed for assaulting his wife has failed to get his sentence cut. Nural Islam Uddin, aged 23, of Townhill Road, Townhill, was appealing against an 18-month jail term he received at Swansea Crown Court in July after pleading guilty to possessing drugs and beating his wife. At the Court of Appeal hearing, Uddin's lawyers argued that he should have received a shorter sentence because the assault he subjected his wife to was not that serious. However, Mr Justice David Clarke, sitting with Mr Justice Teare, said Uddin's wife, who came from Bangladesh to be with him, had been left mentally and physically shaken by what had happened. The judge said that Uddin, a "taxi driver" and takeaway restaurant worker, had drink, drug and gambling problems, and on March 26, his wife hid his amphetamines when he was asleep. Upon waking, Uddin demanded to know where they were, ordered his two young children to leave the room and proceeded to attack his wife, hitting her and then threatening her with a chair, the seat of which became detached and caused an injury to her legs. He also throttled her, causing her to lose consciousness and vomit. When officers arrived at the flat, they found small quantities of cannabis and amphetamines which Uddin said were for his personal use. At Crown Court, Uddin was also given a three-month suspended sentence imposed for motoring offences in September 2005 to run concurrently. ............................... |
