A Carmarthen taxi driver was caught sniffing a young girl's pair of knickers on a washing line outside her home, a court heard last week.

A police search revealed the 51-year-old widower had stolen a pair of the girl's pants when they were found in a chest of drawers at his house, Carmarthen magistrates were told.

In an earlier hearing Jeffrey Baker, of Cae Celyn, Brewery Road, had pleaded guilty to theft, but was also found guilty of harassment after a trial.

Accompanied by his family, Baker appeared in court for sentencing and faced a possible jail sentence. He also admitted possessing a penknife, although the court heard he had no intention of using it, and may not have realised it was an illegal blade.

Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard-Jones said Baker had been seen by the girl's mother in their garden late at night on February 11, and again at night on April 25. He said: "It appears he'd been in the garden acting in a most bizarre manner - going up to the knickers and sniffing them - when police entered.

"A pair of her daughter's knickers had been stolen. "These have been recovered from Mr Baker's house."

Defence solicitor Andrew Markham said: "This is clearly a very serious case. "Mr Baker clearly accepts he's got psychological problems. He is not a well man." He said Baker, who lost his wife four years ago, had the full support of his family and had gone voluntarily to St David's Hospital for help.

He added: "Sending Mr Baker to prison is not going to solve anything. "When he comes out, his problems will still be there."

The magistrates agreed that Baker needed help and decided against jailing him. Baker was sentenced to an 18-month community order with 12 months' supervision.

He was ordered to pay £200 compensation and pay costs of £175. A restraining order was imposed to prevent Baker approaching the house and garden.

The girl cannot be identified for legal reasons.

How strange, They had been washed?? :shock:
If cab drivers are into rear seat sniffing they could always say that they were looking for change down the back of the seat. :roll:

I know its not funny for the chap who was caught in the act but I'm sure the majority of the Taxi trade will get a laff out of this guys misfortune of being caught with his nose in her underwear. I'm going to try and get an interview with the man because I'm intrigued what he is going to say when he goes before the licensing committee to explain his hobby? lol

I'm even more pleased that as per usual outside of the local press we on TDO were the first to run the story and second Taxi Today will be the first of the Taxi mags to run the story in December.

The result of this sniffing exerceise is that this drivers license was "Revoked".

HEADLINE: Safety vow after driver convicted

Taxi licensing bosses have assured taxi users in the county that strict measures are taken to ensure their safety after a Carmarthen taxi driver was caught sniffing a young girl's pair of knickers.

Jeffrey Baker, of Cae Celyn, Brewery Road, has lost his job after he admitted the offence in court. Carmarthenshire Council said this week that the 51-year-old's taxi licence would be revoked following his conviction for harassment and theft.

Baker was sentenced by Carmarthen magistrates on November 1.

During the court hearing, the magistrates were told that Baker had been caught by police sniffing the pants in the garden of the girl's home. A police search revealed a pair of knickers had been stolen and they were found at Baker's house in a chest of drawers.

Baker had pleaded guilty to theft but was found guilty of harassment after a trial. This week, Carmarthenshire Council senior licensing officer Justin Power said Baker's licence had been suspended shortly after he was arrested.

He said: "As soon as we received notification from the police shortly after the initial arrest, we suspended his licence. "His badge was surrendered and he was taken off the road immediately. "His licence was suspended until the outcome of the court case. It will now be revoked."

The court heard that Baker, a widower, was not a well man and had voluntarily gone to St David's Hospital for help. Baker was sentenced to an 18-month community order with 12 months' supervision.

He was ordered to pay £200 compensation and court costs of £175. A restraining order was imposed to prevent Baker approaching the house and garden. The girl cannot be identified for legal reasons.
