| Post subject: | Edinburgh's taxi debate hits the airwaves - Friday 10pm |
This Friday, 17th November, from 9pm Taylor and Thomson will be appearing on talk radio to discuss the taxi issues that matter. We will be addressing:- 1. Taxi licence fees. 2. Council competing with the taxi trade through its own taxibus service, while restricting the issue of licences in its role of Regulator? 3. Why plate "values" in Edinburgh have crept over £50,000 while no new licences have been issued for over 4 years. 4. Why the council insists that the "Interested Parties List" is valid, yet there is no provision for it in Law. 5. Why the council refuses to adopt the London model which has no quantity restriction of taxis, like over 70% of all local authorities, and depends on quality controls, thereby offering the best possible, free market approach to the benefit of customers. Regulatory Committee Convenor, Cllr Wigglesworth, is to be invited to contribute. You can catch us on the web at www.talk107.co.uk from 9pm. Your help and support would be greatly appreciated. |

Well, that was quite an experience. Successful? We await response. Anyway, we were scheduled to be on air for one hour. Because of the response, it was extended many times and ended up as three hours. Our strategy was that I would address the market, the council and the public interest, while Garry would deal with the driver situation, plate premiums and the public interest. On the whole we feel we managed to achieve some of this, although there was much which was missed in the hurly burly of the event, particularly in the early stages of the programme when we were a bit disjointed as we were finding our feet in this new experience. One thing is for sure, no one throughout the three hours disputed the existence of the £50,000 plate value, the point of denial in the other site. Speaking of the other site, perhaps my favourite bit was referring to talk107 as big boys radio and likening it to the Scotsman, while drawing a comparison with the edinburgh forum as akin to the "Dandy". I was at pains however to state that I was not trying to disparage the "Dandy". I am led to believe that this may have bent them out of shape somewhat. Perhaps they should remember that it was they who tried to sideline Taylor and Thomson. It's their fault that they have become an irrelevance. That the argument is being made more vociferously, more actively, now that we are not wasting time playing the childish yah boo games on that site. They got it wrong. They're not not even part of the debate. And, we have given them ample time and opportunity to take us on and beat us. That they didn't speaks volumes about the right of our case, and the futility of theirs. JT |

Anyway, we were scheduled to be on air for one hour. Because of the response, it was extended many times and ended up as three hours. I think the presenter was well happy with the level of debate. I think you both did yourselves proud, as there is no way in a million years I would front up on live radio. You had a lot to lose, but you didn't. Didn't take long for an e-mail about the £50,000 premium plate scam to arrive. Funny that.
