Bus lanes are thrown open during the night Drivers will be able to use many of Luton’s bus lanes to improve traffic flow in the town centre. Vehicles will be allowed to use all the lanes between 7pm and 7am, with the exception of three, which will keep their 24-hour status. Bus lanes are thrown open during the nightThose include the lanes in Inkerman Street and in New Bedford Road, and the lane in Dunstable Road at the Kingsway junction. The decision, made at the Town Hall on Monday, was welcomed by Luton Private Hire Association chairman George Austin. He said: “We have campaigned for this for a long time, so I’m very pleased. We’ve actually got more than what we wanted, but it will mean less pollution and less of danger at night-time. “We thank Luton on Sunday for keeping this important issue in the public eye and for helping us achieve this.” But bus companies are concerned drivers will not adhere to the lane regulations between 7am and 7pm. Arriva commercial director Brian Drury said: “We are delighted that it has not accepted proposals to remove a number of key sections of bus routes within the Luton area. Bus lanes are thrown open during the night“In respect of the decision to change the hours of operation of some bus lanes from 7am to 7pm, we are pleased to hear that this comes with a recommendation that there will be better enforcement of bus lanes through a variety of means including CCTV cameras, traffic wardens and the police, to ensure that during the key parts of the day they are not abused by a minority of inconsiderate motorists.” Council spokeswoman Fiona Mair said: “The committee, noting that enforcement of bus lanes by the council is under consideration and that relatively few buses operate after 7pm, agreed to retain 24-hour operation of the bus lane in Dunstable Road, Inkerman Street and New Bedford bus lane, and to harmonise the hours of operation of all other bus lanes.” Regarding when the new bus lane system might be in place, Fiona Mair added: “The next step is to produce a detailed programme of installation, so we don’t yet have a fixed date.” |
