Police stop 200 taxis in safety crackdown

By Bury Times Reporter

MORE than 200 taxis were stopped and checked by police in Bury last weekend as part of a Christmas crackdown on crime.

The police carried out the operation on all taxis in the town and discovered 24 minor offences, including drivers failing to display identity badges and tariffs.

Four vehicles were seized for having no insurance, two arrests were made for disqualified driving, two for drink-driving and six drivers were arrested for public order offences.

The roadblock marked the start of the BurySafe Christmas disorder campaign and, over the next few weeks, will involve a clampdown on underage drinking, drink-driving, assaults and anti-social behaviour.

Sergeant Rick Pendlebury, from Bury Police, who is leading the initiatives, said: "This campaign will be running until January.

"It's designed to protect the people of Bury allowing them to enjoy Christmas safety."

Councillor Tony Isherwood, executive member for safe, strong and confident communities, said: "Crime in Bury is being stamped out with a vengeance.

"Passengers choosing to travel in taxis entrust their lives to the driver. It is up to the driver to stay on the right side of the law or face the consequences."

FFS leave the tariff sheets, and badges back to front, lads alone and concentrate on the rest.

I can live with drivers not displaying tariff sheets, and not displaying their badges, but it's a different kettle of fish when it comes to;

Four vehicles were seized for having no insurance, two arrests were made for disqualified driving, two for drink-driving and six drivers were arrested for public order offences.

Sort that lot out first, and then have a quiet chat with the others. :wink:

To a certain degree, you have to wonder about the local authority, don't they keep records of insurances etc?

Don't courts and the police advise La's when people appear?
