Post subject:  Jim Taylor throws down gauntlet to Edinburgh council
Today, I applied for a new taxi licence plate in Edinburgh.

Taxi licence plates here are currently trading/transferring for over £50,000 - expressly prohibited in the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982.

With my near 15 years service as a taxi driver in Edinburgh, the fact acknowledged by council leaders that Edinburgh's economy is booming, the fact that no new taxi licences have been issued for around 4 years, the four-fold expansion of the private hire fleet in that time, the introduction of the council's new taxi-bus service to the airport, City of Edinburgh Council's position of refusing to issue additional taxi licence plates on the grounds of "no significant unmet demand" is now clearly untenable.

At a time when City of Edinburgh Council has a policy of refusing to grant new licences, this application prepares the ground to articulate the case for modernising the taxi trade in Edinburgh, in whichever formal arena the council chooses.

This process will assuredly bring those elected and unelected officials responsible for administering the taxi trade in Edinburgh, forward to publicly account and be held responsible for their actions.

Not only do you have a spot on case, if this process does go to court for appeal, then it will be an ideal opportunity to get councillors in the witness box and force them to answer all the difficult questions under oath, that they've been avoiding.

They'd have to tell the truth. :shock: :shock:

Granting licence plates would be secondary to avoiding public humiliation and saving their own skins, and political careers.

You only need do 4 years to become a doctor, 5 years to become a vet, yet even after 15 years in this trade, unless you want to wet the beak of an existing owner for £50,000+, you can't become a taxi owner in Edinburgh. [-(

Thought I would ask my local councillor for his support of my licence application.

Given that taxi licence plates are currently trading/transferring for over £50,000 - as I'm sure you are aware, expressly prohibited in the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982 - along with my near 15 years service as a taxi driver in Edinburgh, your placing on record that Edinburgh's economy is booming and the fact that no new taxi licences have been issued for around 4 years, can I count on your support, as my ward councillor, for my application for a new taxi licence plate?

Curiously, he sent me a read receipt but he seems to have some difficulty responding? :D

Seems he's got the same bug as the rest of the council who all have difficulty answering questions to the electorate they're supposed to represent. Such is democracy?

Dear Mr Jasbar,

Thank you for your recent letter.

As you will be aware, the local authority last year commissioned a survey into demand, the result of which has been to continue to restrict the number of Hackney carriage plates issued by the local authority.

At this early stage, in being a mere matter of months since the local authority chose to adhere to the findings of the survey, it is unlikely that the policy of the local authority will change.

The one which will go on trial before a Sheriff and will have to be properly explained?

Given I'll be doing a "Tommy Sheridan", I can't wait to finally get those responsible for the mirage which was the Jacobs survey in the witness box, under oath, answering my questions, and before a Sheriff.
