TAXIS SAY NEW BUS LANES ARE 'UNFAIR' (WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 29) PRIVATE hire companies say they are being discriminated against because they are being forced to wait in jams while hackney carriages filter through the bus lanes. There are currently about 52 licensed hackney carriages and more than 900 private hire cars in the Vale. Time Cars manager Shabir Nabi said the exclusion of private hire vehicles means the lanes are not supporting public transport as intended and would not help to ease congestion. Mr Nabi said: "We are public transport as well so we need the same treatment as hackney carriages but the county council doesn't seem to understand that. "They're saying they wouldn't be able to identify our cars in the lane and it might encourage drivers to use the lanes too. But we were given stickers to put on the side of our cars which say they are private hire. We would like people to support us because why should our customers be stuck in traffic?" Cllr Val Letheren said: "Private hire vehicles don't look like taxis and can't easily be distinguished from private cars. Allowing them to use bus lanes would confuse the general driving public and therefore would mean it would be difficult to enforce." |

We have the same problem here and the bit that always make me laugh is "They're saying they wouldn't be able to identify our cars in the lane and it might encourage drivers to use the lanes too. But we were given stickers to put on the side of our cars which say they are private hire. We would like people to support us because why should our customers be stuck in traffic?" Cllr Val Letheren said: "Private hire vehicles don't look like taxis and can't easily be distinguished from private cars. Allowing them to use bus lanes would confuse the general driving public and therefore would mean it would be difficult to enforce." The county council argument seems to fall flat on its face considering the stickers and plates etc are supposed to make us easily recognisable by drunk people on saturday night. If other drivers cannot see that we are private hire then maybe they shouldn`t be on the road. |

HTF can it be difficult to enforce?
Stop the cars, if they are licensed then let them on their way. If not then fine them. What is so f***ing hard about that?
