RUFFIANLY GHARRY WALLAHS
Episode At Sealdah Station
It is about time that the police devoted some attention to the conduct of hackney carriage drivers who ply for hire from the Sealdah Railway station.
There is accommodation outside the arrival platform for nearly a hundred vehicles and a perfect pandemonium exists on the occasion of the arrivals of trains. Not only are the gharries badly parked; but the drivers assemble at the station exists, in some instance completely blocking the thoroughfare and, as a consequence, passengers and others having business in the station are hustled and jostled in a disgraceful manner.
As an example of this, a lady who arrived by one of the early morning trains yesterday walked out of the station and hailed a carriage. She was immediately surrounded by a horde of shouting ill dressed ruffians who in the end did not hesitate at laying hold of their victim, and attempted to drag her in opposite directions. Fortunately a railway official came to her rescue, and the incident terminated.
There was, however, no policemen present and the men were able to do as they pleased. These are the conditions existing at Sealdah today, and the matter is commended to the authorities having jurisdiction as being worthy of immediate and drastic attention.
