Taxi driver tells of knife terror

Dec 3 2006

By Sarah Robertson, The Sunday Sun

A terrified cab driver says he wants to quit Britain after two North thieves subjected him to a knifepoint robbery, for just £80.

Italian Franco Vellotto feared he was going to die when a blade was held to his ribs in the back of his taxi as the thugs demanded cash.

However, he managed to persuade them not to hurt him and handed over his takings, then watched shaking as they fled on foot.

Mr Vellotto, 23, sobbed as he relived his ordeal. He said: "I was terrified. When they pushed the knife against me I thought they were going to kill me. Every time I close my eyes I see and feel it."

He became a taxi driver in February and works for Cumbrian firm B-Line Taxis based in Windermere.

Mr Vellotto was in Bowness when the two men approached his brand new Fiat Diablo people carrier outside the Royalty Cinema at 9.30pm on Friday and asked to be taken to nearby Winster. He said: "I didn't see anything suspicious about them, they were just a couple of normal guys.

"They never spoke in the car and when we were going along Kendal Road they grabbed me from behind and shouted at me to stop. I was shocked and didn't know what was going on and then I felt the cold metal of the knife. They held it against the left-hand side of my body.

"I looked at it and I went white because I was so scared. I did not know what to think and I held my hands up and just told them `please take the money, it is there on the left hand side'."

The thieves then forced Mr Vellotto to open the car doors for them and ran off leaving him shaken but unhurt.

Mr Vellotto, who has lived in Windermere, Cumbria, for three years, says he now wants to go back home to Naples in Italy. He said: "It is so stressful that I am frightened to go out. I liked Windermere and I was happy working as a taxi driver, but it is not safe here."

Owner of B-Line Taxis, David Windsor said: "This was a horrible incident, but thankfully it is not common. This is the second one I've heard of in 23 years."

A Cumbria police spokesman said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of the cinema in Bowness on Friday, December 1, around 9.30pm.

"The men were 30 to 35 years old. One was 6ft, of thin build, with sunken features and wearing a black leather jacket with blue jeans. The other was short, wearing a dark red, zipped tracksuit with pattern across the chest."
