November 30, 2006 Thursday HEADLINE: Taxi driver avoids ban for driving twice speed limit A Private hire driver caught speeding at more than twice the limit has escaped a driving ban. Majid Nadeem was seen by two police officers in Burslem as they were heading to the custody unit at Etruria. Mike Rowley, prosecuting, told North Staffordshire magistrates Nadeem's Nissan was accelerating away and the officers decided to check its speed. Mr Rowley said the driver of the police vehicle kept a constant distance behind the defendant's car, travelling between 70 to 80 miles an hour behind the Nissan. The speed limit was 30 miles an hour. He said officers activated the blue light and Nadeem stopped. Mr Rowley said the driver thought he was doing 60 miles an hour. Nadeem, aged 22, of Spring Road, Normacot admitted speeding on August 6. He was fined £200 with £60 costs and his licence was endorsed with six penalty points. Stephen Park, defending, said Nadeem did 25,000 miles a year in his job and had been a private hire vehicle driver for three years. He said at the time this client was on his way to pick up a fare and was not looking at his speedometer. Mr Park said Nadeem had to accept he was travelling at an unacceptably high speed at the time. He asked the court to let the defendant keep his licence. ............................... |

What grips me is that once again a private hire driver is referred to as a taxi driver. Do we defend the distinction, or not? |
