A SINGLE council has imposed more than 100 fines on people caught flouting the smoking ban.
Renfrewshire Council reached its "century" last week when a taxi driver at Glasgow Airport was caught smoking in his cab.
Its hard line contrasts sharply with most other authorities which have penalised only a handful of smokers.
A total of 103 people in the council's area - which covers Paisley, Johnstone and Renfrew - have been given £50 fixed penalty fines since the ban was imposed on March 26.
The figure is by far the highest in Scotland - Glasgow has issued just 15.
A spokeswoman said Renfrewshire was proud to be leading the way.
"In the first few weeks of the ban we adopted a softly-softly approach and tried to educate people but we've moved on.
"We aim to ensure our procedures reflect what the public want."
Of the 103 fines issued, 46 were taxi drivers in their cabs, 21 people in public service vehicles such as buses and trains, 34 goods vehicle drivers and only two in pubs.

Well now we have the real historical perspective, only written long after the event.

Where Borman, Eichmann and the rest of the escaping Nazis went wrong was that rather than head for Argentina, they should have headed for Renfrewshire.

Where Mossad went wrong was that rather than traipsing round South America, they could have sojourned in Bonnie Scotland, a fertile ground for totalitarian, **** policies.

ID cards. Summary Justice. Removal of the right ot remain silent. Intrusive national road pricing.

When George Orwell wrote Animal Farm and 1984 they were received by reasonable folks as a warning.

Tony Bliar's New Labour fascist party are actually using them as a recipe.

Then we have that paragon of the working classes Gordon Brown. The latest aspirant to the fascist crown.

Another fuel tax increase. £10 per flight tax, which will impact most severely on the average joe taking his family to Benidorm.

No increase in winter fuel allowance, despite the fact that this fascist government has allowed greedy grasping privatised fuel companies to rip us off by hiking tariffs over 70%. No matter, old folks can just put on more sweaters - bah humbug.

A national road pricing schemne that will prove little more than another lucrative tax for government to squander, and which will also help our big brother society being delivered by Labour fascists.

89 working class stealth taxes since the [edited by admin] came into power. Some record of working class loyalty that, eh?

Interest rates higher than everywhere else in the European Union, and the US.

Hospitals and schools financed by private enterprise, a guaranteed rip off we workers will have to pay for generations to come.

Myriad corrupt transport schemes which, surprise surprise, private finace won't come up with the cash for because it knows they are a turkey and we taxpaying mugs will cough up.

We're heading for the bullet against the wall job, because our "democracy" offers no opportunity for us to vent our ire.

It scares me sh-tless.

Just me getting a bit steamed up and telling it how it is, I guess.

Not censorship, just maintaining a high level of decorum. I guess we're all the better for that.

At least on this site we're allowed to argue a point without all the yah boo rantings of Edinburgh's "dandy" site.

BTW, have you been there recently. As predicted, it's dying. No, it's already dead.

I may have a vested interest in the long term when it comes to Edinburgh, so I do have a peep every now and again.

It could be a good site, but Hearts and Hibs could be good teams.

Course you'll sort them terry.

And Santa is going to visit you soon, as well.

You've had ten years to "sort" Tory Blair, what's stopping you?

Er, Hearts are off on their autocratic ramblings. Vlad is determined to impale. This time it's the club captain.

Now the Hibees. That's my gig. If we can hold onto our talent, we'll do well.

But Sussex, this year's, and next's, is to modernise our trade in Edinburgh.

Watch this space.

Incidentally, did a 25 minute gig on Talk107 again tonite. Scottie McClue was interested to know what was happening. Ran right through the 12.30 news bulletin so I guess I got his attention. Asked me to keep him updated about the campaign. Open invitation or what?

Draft taxi action plan due soon. Will it be myth or reality?

You'll all know as soon as I do.
