New look at cab colour debate


CABBIES are getting to have their say about the future colour of the cars.

Welwyn Hatfield Council had planned to bring in a raft of changes to the area's taxis from April.

But the council's cabinet decided that there had not been enough consultation with the trade and more talks were needed.

In the New Year the drivers' concerns will be taken back to the environment overview and scrutiny committee, which already recommended the plans were approved.

The taxi owners had expressed opposition to proposals that:

- All Hackney Carriage cars - those that can pick up form the rank - should be coloured silver with a maroon stripe.

- All private hire cars should be coloured dark blue

- All cabs should have the council's crest on their back doors.

A spokeswoman for Welwyn Hatfield Council said the Taxi Quality Partnership would meet in the New Year.

She added that the changes would not come into effect in April and no new date had yet been proposed.
