The first thing people might be wondering, is what you mean by best? London has the hardest street knowledge test of any licensed area in the UK, if thats what you mean? Having said that, I understand the runs could all be completed within 18 months if the PCO got their act together?

Let us know what you mean by best because I suspect many might disagree with you?

Some people are on record as describing London Taxi drivers as "rude". Do you think that should be included in the evidence when considering whether or not they are the best cabbies?

Damming evidence that London cabbies might not be the best in the world.
.......................................................................

SNUBBED BY THE HEARTLESS CABBIES OF LONDON; SICK WIFE HAS TO PUSH DISABLED HUSBAND FOR TWO HOURS.

A BIRMINGHAM cancer victim was forced to push her wheelchair-bound husband for two hours across central London after they were left stranded by the capital's cabbies.

Fifty-three-year-old Marie Stokes, who is undergoing chemotherapy treatment, was left close to exhaustion by the ordeal during what should have been a fun -filled weekend break.

Husband and multiple sclerosis sufferer Robert Stokes, aged 55, had arranged the trip in a bid to boost Marie's spirits following the removal of one of her breasts.

But the couple, from Grange Farm Drive, Kings Norton, claim cabbies turned the pounds 300 dream trip into a nightmare because they "could not be bothered with the hassle" of picking up a wheelchair bound passenger.

Disappointed Marie, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in May, said: "The London cabbies like to boast they are the best in the world but they were rude, arrogant and spiteful to us. "They were a disgrace to our country. Goodness knows what a disabled foreigner would have thought."

The couple claim things first turned sour when two cabs outside their Royal National Hotel refused to take them to Her Majesty's Theatre where they had tickets for Phantom of the Opera.

They said a third cab reluctantly agreed after they offered to pay double fare. During the journey, however, the couple claim they were subjected to a tirade of four letter words from the cabbie, annoyed at having to get out his special wheelchair ramps.

Things got worse after the show when they spent more than 30 minutes trying to flag down a cab as other theatre-goers were picked up around them. Eventually they gave up and Marie spent the next two hours pushing Robert back to the hotel.

Robert said: "Marie is obviously weak at the moment from the chemotherapy and she was totally exhausted by the time we got back to the hotel.

"I feel very sorry for her because this was meant to have been a special treat to help boost her morale. We've never had any problems with the cabbies in Birmingham but those London lot ruined everything."

A spokesman for the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association in London said: "I'm at a loss for words. All our cabs are wheelchair accessible and our drivers are usually only too willing to help.

"All I can assume is that this couple were extremely unlucky in the drivers they came across and we apologise for the problems they say they encountered."

A spokesman for the London Tourist Board added: "I'm very disappointed but also surprised that this couple had such a bad experience. "The service provided by London taxi drivers is always rated very highly by visitors in our customer satisfaction surveys."

Could London Cabbies be the best at Tax evasion? Possibly? if this person is typical of the London Cabbie?

COY v KIME (HMIT) (1986)

Ch D (Finlay QC)

TAX

INCOME TAX ASSESSMENTS : TAXI DRIVER : SCHEDULE D CASE I : RECORDS OF TAKINGS NOT ACCURATE

General Commissioners justified in increasing income tax assessments made on a taxi driver under Sch.D Case I

General Commissioners were justified in increasing income tax assessments made on a taxi driver under Sch.D Case I, being satisfied that the records of weekly takings kept by the taxpayer were not accurate.

"The taxpayer was a London taxi driver". He kept a notebook that he wrote up on finishing work each night, but did not enter individual fares in it. One notebook in evidence showed takings of £24 - £25 per night. His income & expenditure accounts for the years 1981-1985 showed net profits between £2,523 & £3,363.

The inspector refused to accept accounts for the 2 later years & raised further assessments. On appeal the General Commissioners decided that they were not satisfied that the notebooks were an accurate record of the taxpayer's takings, & determined the assessments in amounts greater than those contended for by the taxpayer but less than those put forward by the tax inspector.

HELD: On the material before them the Commissioners were entitled to conclude as they had. They had not erred in law & there were no grounds for saying that the further assessments were not validly made. The taxpayer's appeal was dismissed.
