It may not surprise some but the tax burden is now the highest since records began. Thank you Mr Brown.

Tax burden on wages climbs to the highest since records began: Take on income equivalent to 23.6 per cent: Added squeeze on consumer spending

Times, December 22, 2006, 44

Author Rozenberg, Gabriel

Date Dec 22, 2006

Figures from the Office for National Statistics shows the tax burden on average wages has risen to its highest level since records began in 1987, squeezing consumer spending.

The figures show that taxes on income are now equivalent to 23.6 per cent of wages and salaries. Taxes on incomes rose by 6.7 per cent over the past year, much higher than the 4.6 per cent rise in wages.

Disposable incomes rose by only 1.3 per cent in the year to the third quarter of 2006, the weakest rise in household budges since the fourth quarter of 2004.

The figures were contained in the National Accounts, which contain the most detailed description of the state of economic growth.

I think you are missing the point GMB.
We are paying more tax under a LABOUR goverment than when the tories were in. You are saying don't vote in the Tories because we will pay more, well, I am happy to take a chance, the Tories cannot be any worse than this lot we have in now.

The best thing that could happen to the tory party is for Gordon Brown to become PM.

As for what's best for the labour party, not really sure I care anymore.

Come MAY local elections you need to think about getting into power the Party that will respond to your interests and industry. Now is the time to organise in your area, they will soon be on the knocker.Lets here no more whining that Councils dont understand, you have the power to ensure that the council you get does UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only hope labour have at doing even half decently in the May local elections is for Mr Blair to stand aside before.

Sussex is right, Mr Brown will be a gift to the Tory party.

Terry,

Mr Brown is cosmetically challenged, 50% of voters vote on looks as opposed to substance of policy. Plus he's a Scot, do you think the English would want someone in Downing Street whose fellow countrymen laugh everytime we lose at sport?

Capt so hes an ugly git, matches his politics!
The question is is labour the best of 2 evils?
What no-one responded to is of course the local elections, these election specificaly affect our industries. We continualy see the pathetic whining on here about Councils, amateurs, dont understand, out of touch, and other ACCURATE comments. So the question is what you going to do about it, suggestions get your issues debated in the press, question via the press the Partys policies on your issues [more less cabs, ranks, transport contracts, marshals, policing, vehicle age,] the list is endless, in Brighton we are highlighting the use of other authorities vehicles, by the council on school, social service contracts, this will be major election issue, in some wards it could change control, and thereby change the colour of the council ,the politicians are cute enough to see that and now want to work with us re joint press releases, campaigning, thereby we will solve the problem we hope. the elections are in May, which means get your act into gear NOW.One is for certain do nothing, you have no right to WHINE in the future.
ORGANISE ORGANISE AGITATE!
