Robbers attack city taxi driver with fence post

POLICE are hunting robbers who attacked a taxi driver with a fence post.

The 34-year-old driver was punched in the face and attacked with the post by a gang of young people, who made off with hundreds of pounds in cash as well as a number of expensive gadgets.

The attack happened in Harleston Road, Cosham, Portsmouth, where the driver had been called. Police believe the call was for a real job, and not a false call by the gang.

As the driver got out of his car, a white Skoda Octavia, he was approached by a man and two women. He was punched in the face and his mobile phone snatched along with some money.

The gang then took more money from the car, a Tom-Tom satellite navigation system and a second mobile.

As the gang made off, the driver followed them to Maidstone Crescent, where the man in the gang then attacked him again, this time with a wooden fence post.

The trio got away with a total of £360 cash in the attack at 10.45pm on Christmas Day.The driver was not seriously injured, suffering cuts and swelling.

The male gang member was described by police as a white man in his late teens or early twenties, of medium build with swept-back hair.

The first woman was white, has dark hair and was wearing a black top and blue jeans.

The second was also white, and was carrying a black
bag.

Anyone with information should contact Det Con Sanzen-Baker at Fratton police station on 0845 045 4545.

yeah. nice of our local paper to print how much money was stolen. now every idiot will be robbing cab drivers thinking we all carry that sort of money all the time. i don't know the driver involved but if he was carrying that amount of cash in his bag im not saying he deserved it but it was a bit stupid. he should of at least put his notes in the boot or under the mat surely. i dont have anything on show in my car (saloon) not even a mobile

I feel sorry for the guy; we shouldn't have to put up with this just carrying out our jobs. But - I have to agree with noname... he shouldn't have been carrying that amount of cash. He'll prbably find that his Insurance has a cash limit of £100 or if he's really lucky £200.

A little reminder to us all that we do get careless and forget how much cash we actually have on us at one time :? I'm reminded of an old guy (sadly no londer with us) who gave me the best bit of advice I ever had when I started Cabbing - carry two cash bags, your genuine one out of site and one filled with a couple of quid of 2p's and some ripped up newspaper; if you get threatened throw the one with the coppers in it out the window and get your foot down. Haven't had to use it but if could buy a valuable few seconds.
