NOT FARE! Cab fury after shopping trip STRANDED: Stephen with wife Sheena outside Tesco with daughter Sky, 15, friend Katrina Brown, 13, and their youngest child Tara, also 13.A Greenock shopper is going off his trolley about the lack of taxis in Inverclyde. Dad-of-five Stephen Johnstone, who lives in Ardentinney in Argyll and regularly shops in Greenock Tesco, ended up getting two taxis from the store back to the Gourock ferry after a shopping trip because he couldn’t get a five-seater cab. Stephen, 45, said: “It’s shocking. Tesco should take a stand and tell taxi companies they can’t operate from the car park until they cater for families. These four-person cabs are no use to anyone. I was told I couldn’t get a bigger taxi unless someone is disabled. I feel my family is being discriminated against.” He added: “I missed the boat anyway that day. It’s not right. I could have gone to Glasgow to shop.” Stephen is urging taxi companies to change their practices. He said: “The whole system of giving out taxi licences has to be looked into. It cost me £12.40 from Greenock to the Gourock ferry for two taxis. I could have hired a car cheaper and had it all day and taken my custom elsewhere.” Stephen is so incensed he has written to Provost Ciano Rebecchi to complain. The Provost said: “Under the Road Traffic Act, children need individual seat belts and, as such, only four people can use a saloon, but we do have people carriers in Inverclyde. I cannot dictate to taxi drivers what size of cab they should have as long as they meet all the criteria. I will look into the matter to find out how many big cabs we have in Inverclyde.” |

I think the four seater cabs will be of use to four people, three people, two people and one person
