Late pub hours bring more cabs

THE number of taxi ranks in Sheffield is to be increased because late pub opening hours mean more people are hailing cabs.

Councillors at Sheffield Council's Cabinet will next week discuss plans to increase the number of ranks to solve the problem.

Under the plan, dubbed the Sheffield Taxi Strategy, there will be a number of small-scale improvements to the seven existing public ranks at Boston Street, Ecclesall Road, Glossop Road, Leadmill Road, Queens Road, Walker Street and Weston Bank. But there will also be 17 new ranks in areas like Ecclesall Road near to Champs and the Nursery Tavern, Hillsborough/ Bradfield Road, Broomhill, Queens Road, Woodseats and Chapeltown.

The city's taxi drivers' association has been consulted over the move, which if approved will see the new ranks put into place over the next two or three years.

Coun Terry Fox, cabinet member for transport at Sheffield Council, said: "The strategy will improve existing ranks across the city as well as providing a further 17 ranks to meet with demand.

"The implementation of any of these schemes will be subject to full consultation with the taxi trade, stakeholders and local residents.

"These proposals follow the changes we made to taxi ranks last year. The number of taxis in Sheffield has risen substantially over the years, and in turn, the need for sufficient ranking space across the city."

If more cabs are being hailed then surely less rank space is needed :D
