Spot your genuine cab from a fake

Cab users are being urged to be extra careful since reports of a bogus taxi driver who preyed on two young women in Hemel Hempstead.

A man driving a dark green Cavalier-type vehicle is alleged to have posed as a cabbie before sexually assaulting a 28-year-old in November.

A second woman was attacked on New Year's Day in what is thought to be a related incident.

People who use taxis in Dacorum are advised to always check that their driver is licensed before they get into a vehicle.

All cabbies that are licensed with Dacorum Borough Council will have had a criminal record check and are issued a badge to prove it.

They also have to undergo a full MOT test and are subject to regular spot checks.

Police are appealing for information on the bogus taxi driver.

He is described as Asian and in his 30s, of average build, clean shaven and with dark hair.

Residents who use taxis can spot a genuine cabbie using the checklist below:

A badge with the driver's photo and licence number on it should be worn by the driver or displayed clearly in the car.

A plate with a licence number should be displayed on the rear of the taxi in addition to the numberplate. For Hackney carriages these are yellow and all others are white.

Hackney cabs have a white 'taxi' sign on the roof and can be picked up from a taxi rank or where hailed.

Vehicles that do not have a 'taxi' sign are private hire cabs and should be pre-booked through a taxi operator.
