Shoppers in Cowley Road, Oxford, had a narrow escape on Saturday after a car ploughed into a building.

The car, believed to be a black cab, hit Oxfordshire County Council's city office, on the corner of Cowley Road and James Street.

No-one was hurt in the incident that happened at about 2.30pm.

But the crash caused extensive damage to the James Street side of the building - exposing desks, equipment and paperwork.

Police were called to the incident and officers taped the area off before the car was removed.

Specialist contractors were called in to clear the debris and make the offices secure.

The city office building, formerly known as Tyndale House, is used by Oxfordshire County Council's social and community services departments.

Police spokesman James Clements said: "We were called at 2.30pm to reports of a car having crashed into an Oxfordshire County Council-owned building.

"The vehicle was removed from the building about half an hour later and the driver will be spoken to in due course."

Maybe he was looking at his Sat Nav at the time.
