The Council is planning to close one of our most popular ranks at 10pm every evening because of complaints of noise from a hotel and nearby newly built flats, the rank will only be usable during the hours of 0730 to 22 00 hrs, apart from the obvious letter of objection and maybe asking drivers to get their passengers to sign a petition is there any thing else anyone can please think of to help stop this happening. |

I don't know of a court case challenging the decision of a council to remove a Taxi rank. A council is under no obligation to install ranks, although if "part" of the licensing fee is specifically earmarked for that purpose then I suppose it might put them under some sort of obligation? Is there a place near-by where the rank could be recited? Regards JD |

[ Is there a place near-by where the rank could be recited? Regards JD[/quote] there is a rank about 300 yards around the corner and they plan to open a nother one directly opposite across the street, can you imagine 50 people queueing at one rank and 1 person just walking up to the other rank and being picked up straight away, there would be a riot. |

They will need to de-rank it via a traffic order of some sort, not just get the paint out and please themselves. Do the petition lark and try to get the police on board. Something along the lines of slowing down late night passenger dispersal, and increasing the chances of un-licensed pick-ups.

We had a similar proposal in one of our town centres, we decided to show the authorities the folly of their plans, the area in question was town centre with five clubs spewing up to 2000 souls at 2-00 am, at 1-45 am we all parked up on a car park lights out, cabs locked up and stood to watch the fun, by 2-30 am they had to ship in police from neighbouring towns in the borough to quell the riot that ensued, the council wouldn't listen to us but they sure listened to the police, especially as we promised to do it every weekend If you want to deal with this one get all cabs away from the area and wait for the chit to hit the fan |

so the Council wants us to go home at 2200hrs on the whim of some wealthy people who have moved in right on a taxi rank which has been going 20 years or more The people/punters who come to that rank are decent people, office wallahs and management, seems to me, why would they want to go to a hooligan rank and mix with the scum, to which they won't, they will ring PH if the rank gets closed The whole problem is the young kids hanging about, drinking and fighting at one of the most sacred places in city centre, the war memorial, next to the taxi rank, and the taxi drivers are getting the blame |

You know I have spoke to my neighbours, one is a plumber, the other a main dealer car tech, they find it hard to believe all the red tape and the hassle I get as a taxi driver, and they are more highly paid, plus also they deal with the public |

How many of their customers want to rip their heads off or want to eat kebabs in the back of their cars? CC |

In the same breath MacDonalds, a few yards away from the rank are applying for council planning to close at 5am in the morning to which they will get, doesn't make sense, but money could well talk, thats fine, we Macdonalds are more than willing to add a bit more business rates into your Council coffers. sod the taxi drivers, council don't make much out of them The Council giveth and The Council taketh, having read the byelaws, after 1900hrs you can go where you want, sit and ply anywhere in the city until 0700hrs, or cruise and ply till 0700hrs in the morning whats to stop me from sitting in that street or indeed on that taxi rank, as I have just explained the rank will cease to exist after 2200hrs, so at 2200hrs I am now sitting plying just on a street, cos now at this time it ain't a taxi rank so I revert back to the byelaws, ie.sitting anywhere and plying for hire when the rank closes at 10.00 in the evening who is going to police the rank after it closes, the spotty faced hotel manager, or the numpties with the money in the apartments, can't see if the police will be interested, they want the people [punters] out of town and away, so if thats the case, the rank closes at 2200hrs, how about the night club ranks that suppose to end at 0300 hrs but the night club is open till 0400hrs or later, or any other night rank that has a time finish on it but are still worked over that time how much more "no go" places are we going to be restricted from hows about a taxi rank at Station Rise, The Monument, catch all the punters heading for the GNER railway stn rank to which lots of us can't use, then again PH use that place to rest up waiting for a job can anyone tell me what are "Taxi Hailing Points" that are to be established in the city, again see below again T5 see below, I refer to Policy Framework T5, and item 4.12 ref 24 hours drinking http://www.york.gov.uk/transport/ltp2/p ... rategy.pdf |
