You must be having a laugh.

Do you honestly think that 4x4, merc, bmw etc. drivers are going to reduce their road usage through charging?

Isn't it only the lower orders, the working class you're supposed to be trying to protect, that is going to suffer by having to pay?

And, ever increasing amounts as the payment develops into a full blown tax?

Pay again for roads we've already paid for?

But, there again we already do it with education, health care, waste disposal, security etc.

More morally bankrupt policy from New Labour in particular, and government in general.

God save us from pseudo intellectuals and green fascists.

I can see free public transport such as free tubes, free buses and free trains as really good for the taxi and PH trades

Round here the buses are privatised monopolys, we dont have the underground and from memory the rail system is still privatised. So what your suggesting will equal giving private companies even more subsidies?

Jeez Terry, most bus companies take all the subsidies they can, with the free bus travel for pensioners being an obvious example, take the subsidy then reduce the hours pensioners can use buses.

I dont know if youve noticed Terry but London is about the only place left (although there are a couple more) where public transport is in public hands.

The government have had since they were originally elected to sort out both the privatised rail service and the deregulated bus services, yet they have consistantly thrown more and more public money into the hands of private companies.

Yes, here in Edinburgh our principal bus company is owned by the council. And by all accounts it is a success story.

Oh yes, they hiked our taxi tariff by 15% at precisely the same time as they launched their new higher frequency, more routes night bus service.

Oh, and they have just spent £300K launching their new taxibus service to the airport.

And the same council is spending £582m (at today's prices) for a new tram system, managed by its own bus company.

All meanwhile denying cabbies the right to operate their own taxi licence.

Surely it has to be wrong when the local council owns the bus company and regulates, and restricts, its cab trade competition?

When I joined the trade 13 years ago, there were 1030 taxis and around 100 private hire. Today there are 1260 taxis and around 900 private hire.

Because of deliberate council restriction, taxis have increased in that time by around 20%. Private hire have increase by 800%.

Oh, and the last convenor of the regulatory committee, who was instrumental in denying licences? Well he left to take up a position with the local PH big wigs (And he gets £20K for giving up his councillor's beanfeast because of electoral changes).

Meanwhile, the current convenor, who has gone on record to state that the survey used to deny these licences, acquiesced with those denials and, since becoming convenor, has done nothing to investigate the known flaws in the survey. This "man of the cloth" seems to have had difficulty behaving with any moral fibre.

And this council in Edinburgh is a "fit and proper" council to regulate the taxi trade?
