Two in five taxis found to be 'unroadworthy' TWO in five Worcester taxis stopped by council officials were found to be unroadworthy, it has been revealed. In a major sting operation 11 out of 27 taxis - 40 per cent - stopped in the city were found to have major defects. Problems discovered included bald tyres, a leaking fuel pump and spilt brake fluid. In one horror case, a cab had an unsecure steering box - with the bolts holding it together unsheared. The findings have been labelled "a wake up call" to taxi drivers in Worcester, who have been warned licenses will be revoked unless the situation improves. The random raids were carried out by the city council, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), and police officers drafted in from Shropshire on Friday. Taxi cars were stopped as they sat in ranks waiting for customers, and taken to a site in Blackpole to undergo safety checks. Coun Dave Clark, chairman of licensing at the city council, said: "This has got to serve as a wake-up call to the trade that, in the interests of public safety, we will do what we must to ensure that they keep their vehicles in tip top condition. "The only alternative will be to revoke their licence - anything less will not be tolerated." All the taxi drivers were immediately banned from using their faulty vehicles again until they get a new MOT and safety certificate. Shamus Hussain, 22, who drives a taxi in Worcester, said: "I heard about how all these taxis were stopped, and it just shows that although most of them seem to be in good condition, until you you get to the bottom of it you don't really know. "I think it's a case of a few letting the majority of us down." The Taxi Drivers Association was unavailable for comment. |

There has to be an irish connection there somewhere, surely? Quote: The Taxi Drivers Association was unavailable for comment.

I don't suppose the trend will catch on although I suppose it's not beyond all comprehension that there might be at least one or two Mohamed O'reillys knocking about somewhere? Regards JD |
