Taxi driver dies in city shooting

A 53-year-old taxi driver has been shot dead in his cab in Sheffield.
The man, named by colleagues as father-of-five Younis Khan, was shot as he drove along Scott Road, Pitsmoor, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Hackney cab then crashed into the gates of Burngreave Cemetery. Mr Khan was taken to Northern General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Colleagues said taxi drivers had only returned to the area two years ago after declaring it a "no go" zone.

Mr Khan, described as a "well known family man" who drove a Hackney cab, was pronounced dead on arrival at Northern General Hospital.

The area was cordoned off on Wednesday while forensic teams scoured the scene.

'Drivers scared'

Hafeas Rehman, secretary of the Sheffield Taxi Trade Association, said drivers in the city had been shocked to hear of Mr Khan's death.

He said the 53-year-old had been a taxi driver for about 30 years.

"He was well known, a very nice man who worked hard and had a big family", he said.

Mr Rehman said the area where the shooting happened was notorious for drug use and had until two years ago been a 'no go' area for taxi drivers.

He said: "Taxi drivers are very scared now, we've had a couple of robberies recently at gunpoint.

"It is an area where drivers at one point didn't used to go into. It has been a high crime area for a long time but recently has improved a lot.

"They always think twice before picking up there but these last couple of years the confidence in the area has increased."

'Nice gentleman'

The shooting comes just three months after Sheffield City Council installed CCTV cameras in 33 taxis in the city after a spate of attacks on drivers.

The authority said last month that the £7,000 pilot scheme had led to a dramatic reduction in violent incidents against drivers.

Faraz Sharif, a friend of the taxi driver's family, told BBC Radio Sheffield that Mr Khan was well known in the community.

He said the victim had two sons, three daughters and three grandchildren.

He said: "He was well known, a nice gentleman, a taxi driver, a family man with children.

"He used to have a shop and sold it to concentrate on his taxi driving. He was just a nice gentleman."

A bloke goes out to work in his cab, working crap hours and gets rewarded by some dirty piece of scum putting a bullet in him. :sad: :sad: :sad:

Safety is the thing that all the trade associations should be banging on about 24/7, and no issue should top it.

The fact that this happened in Sheffield, who at least have tried at bit by funding the 33 CCTVs, just shows us all how far we need to travel to get our trade away from being the most deadly profession in the country. :sad: :sad: :sad:

A very sad day for the trade IMO. :sad: :sad: :sad:

Afamily has lost the brave man who went about his job to provide for them. I hope the culprits are caught and rot in hell,they are nothing but pure scum. We taxi drivers may have a sense of fear sometimes,but we never give in to the riff raff....

Badger I don't know if your aware of a magazine called Upfront which is put together by two of our lads in Gateshead.

Well they have started a campaign to get CCTV fitted in every taxi and PH vehicle in our region.

Maybe you could look out for an issue, its given out at ranks and offices or if you give me an idea where you are I can get a copy to you.

It seems hard to believe that this was a random shooting. No doubt sooner or later the motive will come out as to why this gentleman was targeted but it wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out that the motive was completely unrelated to his job of driving a cab.

Two held over taxi driver killing

Two men have been arrested over the death of a taxi driver in Sheffield.

Younis Khan, 53, was shot as he drove along Scott Road, Pitsmoor, in the early hours of Wednesday.

South Yorkshire Police said the men, who are aged 23 and 27, were arrested in the Upperthorpe and Middlewood areas of the city on Thursday morning.

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Khan died from a single gunshot to the chest, fired from a handgun. Police have increased patrols in Pitsmoor.

A help desk has also been set up for concerned cab drivers.

Mr Khan's Hackney cab crashed into two parked cars after he was shot. It is believed he lost control of the vehicle because of his injuries. Detectives have said there was no clear motive for the shooting.

After the arrests, Ch Supt Paul Broadbent said: "We've gathered a lot of information and have a number of leads to follow up, but we are still in the early stages of the inquiry.

"We are still appealing for anyone with information to please contact the incident room." Mr Khan, of Abbeyfield Road, Sheffield, was married with three daughters and two sons.

Quite a few years ago one of the drivers in Sefton driving a FX 4 had a sawn-off shotgun placed against the back of his head, the person holding the sawn-off was demanding his nights take, in other words tried to rob him, the driver slammed on his brakes and knocked the barrel up with his left arm,( Bang) off it went, I think that was the start of sun roofs being fitted into FX4's, the bloke escaped but was recognised by another driver, two days later he gave himself up to the police, the trade was looking for him he took the safer option.

There's something very wrong with the amount of Hackney and private hire drivers that are murdered whilst trying to make a living.
