Cabbie crew make grade

Taxi drivers in Middlesbrough have fared well in a customer care test.

Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon has handed out customer care certificates to around 40 taxi drivers from Boro Cars, the town's biggest taxi firm.

The drivers achieved the BTEC Intermediate Award for Transporting Passengers by Taxi and Private Hire - a nationally-recognised qualification.

To get the award, the drivers had to show awareness of a wide range of issues, including how to help disabled passengers, plan routes and general customer care.

Mr Mallon said: "The taxi and private hire trade is an essential cog in the local transport network. They are also ambassadors for the town - very often the first person a visitor to the town will meet.

"It is important they provide a professional and friendly service and I am pleased one of our major firms is investing in customer care training."

John Moon, director of Boro Taxis, said "All drivers operating from Boro Taxis will be required to sit the course and obtain the BTEC certificate. Excellent customer service skills are an essential part of a taxi driver's role."
