Taxi drivers protest over attacks

ALMOST 100 angry taxi drivers vented their fury outside the Guildhall about recent attacks they have endured in Worcester. Around 90 tax drivers appealed for help and support from the city council, who are responsible for issuing them with licences.

The drivers say the council, police and media all have a hand to play in helping keep them safe from trouble. They claim Guildhall bosses "have betrayed" them by publishing results of a series of spot checks on Worcester taxi cars which revealed 40 per cent were unroadworthy.

Since the report became public last month, taxi drivers say attacks on them have increased in the city. Tariq Hussain, 39, of Devon Road, Worcester, said: "I've been driving a taxi for 10 years and the number of attacks on me and other taxi drivers has increased recently.

"Things are getting very bad - I think we've basically been attacked by the city council over that report, and people see that as an excuse to have a go at taxi drivers."

Mohammed Ali, chair of the Taxi Drivers Association, said: "We are here to show our strength of feeling about the situation. The police, media and council need to stick with us, not be against us." Coun Dave Clarke, chair of licencing, said he "deplored" attacks on taxi drivers.

Utter rubbish. [-X

If only it was the case that iffy cars led to iffy attacks then we have a simple solution to one of the trade major problems.

But we don't and the drivers in Worcester have let themselves down by equating iffy motors with scum punters.
