Blackpool Gazette May 22, 2007 HEADLINE: Birthday drink led to taxi hijacking A DRUNKEN couple jumped into an un-attended Blackpool taxi and drove off. The got only 5ft down the road before the irate cab driver reached in and snatched his keys, Blackpool magistrates were told. Donna Peters and Carl Hilton had come to the resort to celebrate Hilton's birthday and got extremely drunk. Peters was almost four times over the limit when she got behind the taxi's driving wheel. Peters, a 39-year-old mother-of-three, of Bedfordshire, admitted taking a car and driving with excess alcohol and without a licence or insurance. Hilton, 39, of the same address, admitted being a passenger in a car taken without consent. Both defendants were bailed by Blackpool magistrates for reports. Suzanne Sanders, pro-secuting, said a taxi driver left his cab with the keys in on Lytham Road, South Shore, on Saturday at 7.10pm. Peters got behind the wheel, shouted for Hilton to get in and drove about 5ft before stopping. The cab driver then grabbed his keys. A breath test showed 132 micrograms of alcohol in her body - 35 is the limit. Steven Townley, defending, said both defendants were regi-stered alcoholics. They started drinking early to celebrate Hilton's birthday and by the time they got into the taxi, they were extremely drunk. Peters had no knowledge of driving and the cab rolled forward a few feet. _______________________________ |
