Post subject:  Safety In Taxis 4 Driver and Passenger

I am trying to get more awareness and input from local authorities, licencing authorities and police et al to improve safety in taxis for both driver and passenger.

Would be interested in anyone else interested in this subject.

I am designing a website with feedback forms for drivers and passenegrs to record their expereince and get a big picture of the big problem and hopefully get those in authority to not disregard cabbie's safety. Still needs twiddling but should be up next week.

Have had a Baptism By Fire this last 18 months after an attack where I defended myself, but then told by police I was being charged for assualt. (There I was sat in their police station covered in my own blood and when I got to the part where I broke my nails on his skin I was told I was being arrested and being cautioned) Tried to raise safety in taxis and lack of support and gathered other drivers experiences. Including experiences of unhelpful police. Drivers can risk themselves getting out and helping but when bobbies turn up they find a charge for the cabbie for extra points. Result - had to hand my licence in. Also my boss told me I could not take any time off as it would interupt his golf.

Realising that I could not highlight driver safety and get sympathy and backing if we don't clean up our own act. I invited response from the general public about safety in taxis and got 48 statements in just 2 days covering the regular stuff of driver inappropriateness to females including sexual harassment and assualt including children going to school.

Took it to licencing office to get a proper campaign going to improve taxi safety for all and all working together. Result, still no licence but they will discuss my concerns when I get my licence back. 18 months on and the windy windy road is still not coming to an end.

I am told I am the only one who is aware of the problem or has brought it up. i hope for enough responses to slap it on their desk and say SORT IT!! instead of leaving it for the individual cabbie to deal with it alone.

Anyone interested and can contribute?

Post subject:  Safety In taxis ?Police Interest

Just received a phonecall from the police (Hello Hello Hello) To say they are interested in my raising the profile of taxi drivers and their safety and better working relationships with police when incidents happen (OK. Don't hold your breath) But will see what will come of it. Police. Not my favourite people for this year but maybe a way forward if we can get us talking to each other instead of pulling us over for extra points at the end of a quiet night for them, but wanting us to be there when they need us.

Anyway, after a sod of a year its a positive.

Who is Tigger? Besides a bouncy bouncy friend of Poohbear. (God this is sounding like a dating site)

Post subject:  Tigger or Trigger

Ok

I think a driver has the nickname Tigger or Trigger. Maybe Morgan. Bit of a terrier especially when it comes to catchin private hire out picking up fares.

Type who is born with a clipboard up[ his a$$ and every section subsection and paragraph and clause and subclause of every handbook and local legislation tatooed on the inner eyelids his brain.

Looks like Eddie Munster the kid out of The Munsters - Am I getting warm?

PS: BBC are interested. Anyone got any good taxi driver abuse stories live in the South and look good on the telly?

Well Trigger was a horse and Tigger is a subscriber to TDO. There is no physical resemblance in characteristics.

You're right, but I didn't catch the website address where junie is hosting all this input. Or does the input come first and the website second?

Post subject:  Safety in Taxis

OK Guys.

I am setting up a website to raise awareness and use it to do some kicking to get safty for driver and passenger in taxis taken seriously. So far despite me collecting multi stories of driver and passenger safety and how crap the system and the police are I am told only I have this problem and no one else has brought this issue up.

But talking to people both drivers and passengers want to improve things. Passengers especially women would like to feel safer by reducing inappropriate behaviour and indentifying offenders. Driver would liem to work together to identyfy abusers and bring an action against them and make them walk or pre-book a designated taxi. Lots of ideas but licencing office say there is not proble with safety in taxis. And taxi drivers are on their own, its only a taxi driver blah blah blah. So am setting up a website Where drivers and passengers can post their experiences. and we may get some better statistics of the problem. Then it cannot be denied. Also questions of if the police and system and authorities were helpful.

I don't accept that we are a Cinderalla service and that we accept abuse or poorer service when things happen. "He's only a taxis driver! is not good enough when someone is attacked and cops it.

Have talked to the police about working better to indentify culprits and reduce abuse and attacks and build better relationships, seeing as we know the streets and towns better than them.

Will tell you when site is up and running. Tried it but it had problems and did not lookas well as I expected so more twiddling.

But if anyone is interested in raising safety in taxis and combating this attitude that its OK to cop a taxi driver I'd be interested.

Junie2006.

Another driver has died in the last 24 hrs and no doubt many have been assaulted during that time.

I feel that a site such as the one you are suggesting, would be excellent in collating information on incidents from up and down the country.
If the description of the incidents followed by shall we say a crime number are put on the web, then a picture will emerge.

We would all be using stats recorded by the police, so it would not be easy for anyone to dispute them. With the amount of stats soon compiled it would not be long before someone sat up and took notice - well I live in hope anyway!

I am sure we have all got a story to tell and will no doubt have more to tell in the future - hopefully!
