DRINK-DRIVE CABBIE FIVE TIMES OVER THE LIMIT; COPS HAD TO HELP HIM STAND UP

By Gordon Currie

A DRUNKEN taxi driver picked up passengers and drove around a town centre while FIVE TIMES the limit.

Police had to hold Trevor Deeks up as they arrested him. Frightened passengers phoned the cops to tell them that Deeks, 45, was drunk on duty. He staggered into a police station and gave two breath samples, with readings of 171 and 158. The legal limit is 35.

Deeks was pulled over in Scone, near Perth, at 5.25pm on a Saturday. He had dropped off passengers in the centre of Perth then driven four miles to Scone to pick up his next fare.

John Malpass, prosecuting, told Perth Sheriff Court yesterday: "The police stopped him and immediately smelled alcohol on his breath. He was arrested." Deeks was held on January 27 while working as a freelance driver for Perth firm Radio Taxis.

The court heard he had not driven a taxi or a private car since.

Alison McKay, defending, said Deeks turned to drink after his marriage broke up. She added: "Until he was stopped, he didn't realise the extent to which he was using alcohol.

"He is remorseful and very embarrassed. "He is quite clear that this is a problem which has now been brought home to him."

Deeks, of King Street, Perth, admitted driving with an alcohol reading of 158. Sheriff Robert McCreadie deferred sentence until August to give him the chance to attend a detox course and banned him from driving in the meantime.

The sheriff said he was concerned by Deeks's high alcohol reading but would sentence him once he had assessed how well his drink problem was responding to treatment.

Deeks, a father of one, said: "It is just things I am going through at the moment. I have got no excuse."

If ever I happened to be five times over the limit, not only would I struggle to stand up, but I would be lucky to still be alive.

About 12 years ago there used to be a driver round our way who was a persistant drink driver. he even had the nerve to keep bottle of beer in the taxi office on a friday night ! I coined the nickname for him of Roger drinkdrive which he seemed to revel in but it took the police 2 years to catch him and that was despite both lincolnshire police and Rutland police having been fully put in the picture by several local cabbies

His favourite trick was to spend a night in the pub and then run the regulars home but by the time the police got round to trying to catch him at that particular pub he'd usually switched pub ! His other trick was to turn up at the rank at about 11 pm having spent the night in a pub and his driving reflected that with many tales of other cabbies nearly run off the road by his driving

Eventually he was caught though and the council never let him have his badge back

Reminds me of Gordon from Manchester, who used to come onto forums when he'd had a few, threw abuse at everyone then next day claimed that his son had found his password.

Yeah .............. Yorkie used to do the same.

Happily we don't need alcohol to abuse each other Dusty ................... otherwise we'd be alcoholics and fighting on the Jeremy Kyle show.

B. Lucky :D

Yes, that would be interesting - one of us would be sitting down, the other would come on, stand there and holler abuse, then sit down, then would all go for counselling.

Yorkie/Wharfie was a regular poster on several taxi forums (including one or two before this one), who managed to make most of the current spats seem like a tea in the park.

He seems to have disappeared from the forum scene completely.
