Pensioner's £2,000 taxi to Europe

A PENSIONER fed up with airports chose a novel way of travelling to her dream holiday - by paying £2,000 for a taxi from Suffolk to Greece.

Instead of battling through the airport, 89-year-old Kathleen Searles and her 73-year-old friend Wendy Turner opted for the comfort of an eight-seater taxi covering 4,000 miles across Europe to visit Aristotle's School in Naousa, where Alexander the Great studied.

Mrs Searles said: “I thought to myself that I am unfortunately very elderly and I didn't fancy flying too much. “I am not very keen on airports anymore as I don't like being taken around in a wheelchair.

“I have been in this particular taxi on a number of occasions when I have gone to London and I just thought it would be a comfortable way to get to Greece. “I thought it would be very nice just to get in the car at Sudbury. So this is what I did.”

Taxi driver Julian Delefortrie, said: “I had taken Mrs Searles to London before and she asked me if I would like to drive to Europe. “I said I would love too but I never expected a trip to Greece - it certainly made a change from the typical airport run.”

During a whistle-stop drive through Europe, Mrs Searles then decided to stop by Belgrade, Budapest, Austria and Germany on her journey home.

works out at about 50p per mile. I guess Taxi's are cheap in Suffolk, glad I don't work there.

The point is surely that the average driver can afford to jobs like this cheaply as regards charge per mile because they know they'll be minted as compared to what they'd earn normally.

Well it would do for me.

Say £500 for fuel, although in Europe it would be cheaper than here, then that leaves the driver £1,500 for a weeks work.

Now I hope the old girl paid for his food and board, else that could knock another £500 off, which doesn't make it so attractive.

But, for me, earning a grand for touring Europe ain't such a bad thing. :wink:

Unless he didn't pay the extra for the European maps .................. what a [edited by admin] that would be eh.

I would have knocked the job back ................. well wor lass doesn't let me go away for more than one night .............. it must be because she likes to get her hands on something every day ............. my money bag.

I watched the news item of this and they showed a TX2, if it was one of them it would never have made it. :oops: :shock:
If it was an MPV it would have been able to do over 40 mpg and the diesel would have been over a third cheaper 8) :lol: :lol:

Doesn't say if the ferry fees came out of the £2grand. Also it is unlikely that his insurance would have covered him for H/R abroad so would have had to pay extra premium.

I wouldn't have done it for that price.

His insurance would have covered him, you can legally drive for 30 days in Europe on any taxi policy, as it includes social and domestic

My understanding is that it excludes hire and reward though.

Agree with the other Skippy - read your Policy and you can enter Europe fully covered for as long as you are hired, Breakdown cover is a diferent story expecially of you are relying on warranty assistance. However if it's a one way trip you may have problems; your not hired on the return - but I'm sure that you would book the day before to ensure it was a holiday. Once took a Passport and Visa to Italy - and sorry but I charged a bit more plus expenses. Then mine was Oilfied related so you can basically charge what you like if they need it there theywill pay you.

With sories like this maybe we should all keep our passports in our cabs. Brings a new meaning to going out to work not knowing where you will end up! :mrgreen:
