Radio 4, Monday 4th June 1100am.

"is a jolt in the realworld as we meet Derek Merry, Plymouth "taxi driver" who for the last three years has run a training course for Eastern Europeans learning to be British mini-cab (sic) drivers. Why? Because there's a shortage andit pays well. (compared to eastern europe?)

Worth a listen?

He lost his license after he was convicted of assauliting his Girlfriend and won it back on appeal. He is fluent in several languages and was and probably still is Taxifast head of recruitment in Eastern Europe.

He threatened to throw his Girlfriend from a balcony and held her head in a pillow so she could not breathe. After being found guilty he was sentenced to a maximum 240 hours community punishment order and told to pay £300 compensation to his ex-partner, plus £364 court costs.

He is the nephew of JP who sacked him after the court case but reinstated him as a driver afterwards.

The program should be interesting, hopefully.

Regards

JD

They dont pass them specifically for Plymouth, but as they're part of JP's outfit I guess if no-one wants them JP will have em.

The course they pass is a btec (i think) this qualifies them.

Mind you, if you pass a course with 90 odd percent I suggest you're either a genius of the course is for dummies.

Having said all of the above, if you look on the Plymouth Council website, theres a surprising number of east european sounding names appearing in front of the council for various misdemeanors....would make me question the standard of training.

I think next weeks programme may be more interesting.

Sounds to me like they were setting some of the people up for a fall.

Me? I'm moving to Torquay to drive PH. You will "earn" a grand a week, alledgedly.    (will it be less the car rent, the radio rent, fuel, insurance, accommodation costs, repayment for the Prague training school, leaving not very much after a 84 hour week?)

If you missed the programme, go to listen again on BBC. V. interesting.

According to jp, he NEEDS these extra drivers because he can't recruit enough drivers locally.

More like the drivers he had couldn't earn enough or got fed up with his policies.

He bought 17 hackneys last year, and has sold most of them again! rumour has it he tried to hand back the taxibus service he has been banging on about for so long, but was told by the council that he has to honour his contract with the department of transport.

As for the prague recruits he is bringing in, they are nothing but trouble. They learn the routes parrot fashion, then when they are finally let loose they have to rely on tomtom!

Should be gratefull to jp as he has given us more work cause public don't want these idiots driving them

Get on Agga, i can confirm i will no longer use JP's service when i need a taxi for that very reason!!!!!! However they seem to be getting around now so the best thing to say is your going in to the dockyard if you catch my drift or if my friendly hack drivers are about i use them

I see there are a couple driving hackneys now, although one is awaiting sentence for that crash on the tavistock road.
