Post subject:  7 Day Ban for refusing to carry Guide Dog, Disgusting!

A Luton driver has been handed down a mere 7 day driving ban for leaving a blind 20 year old woman at the side of the road because he decided to shout "no dogs" an drive off. This has been an offence since 1995 under the Disability Discrimination Act! Surely without a Medical Certificate to show that there was a reason for him not to carry the dog this driver should have had his Hack Licence revoked forthwith.

This kind of behaviour really gets to me; especially in an area where M1 WAV's get free plates (thats E7 / TX / New Transit with tail-lift etc) and you be 8th E7 on the rank and still get the wheelchair job!

Further this ranked a on Ceefax a page above he guy that only got three years for the murder of a cabbie! Oh sorry was reduced to manslaughter! (Apologies to the family but this drivers story should have taken precidence and the bsatard should have got Life!)

Do you not think seven days without pay is enough to remind him and his colleagues that what happened is not on?

Would you rather a longer ban and him losing his house? :?

7 days should serve as a a good reminder to everyone. If he does it again then he should expect a much harsher penalty.

The driver did wrong but I would say if anything a seven day ban is a bit harsh

If the driver was a Muslim they are not allowed contact with dogs because thier faith disallows it as they are "unclean"

Personally the dogs are better behaved than some of the scumbags we pick up!

I don't see what the fuss is about the guide dog sits in the back with the passenger the driver doesn't have to go anywhere near it if they don't want to personally i have always taken ALL dogs cats rabbits & parakeets and only ever once had a problem animals are often far cleaner than people especially ones with toddlers who give them crisps chocolate or sweets to eat on the journey  :x

I agree, guide dogs act in a far better manner than most, if not all, of our punters.

But for a first offence I think more than a seven day ban is too much.

A court fine and costs would have done the job required.

Are you sure about this?

Yep I'm sure

I would say a 7 day ban was a sensible approach. Severe enough to make him think very hard about doing it again, but not so hard as to lose him his livelihood.

Should any driver, regardless of beliefs, be allowed to refuse a job like that, without a medical reason?

Legally no, and morally no.

Does this mean they can refuse shopping in case there is pork or bacon amongst it?

People can refuse to take anything, but it's done to whether their will LOs allow it. :?

But any firm that stops taking people cos they have booze and certain meats, is a firm with a very short life-time. :?

What should be remembered is that like any other faith Islam is a broad church (almost literally) thus the extremist element may not be representative of Muslims generally, just as the German Christians (who effectively endorsed Hitler) didn't represent mainstream Christian thought.

But I don't think the law allows drivers to refuse to take fares on religous grounds.

There are genuine religious considerations here, whether certain readers/posters like it or not.
Lets consider the motorcycle helmet laws which allow sikhs to wear their turban rather than have to replace them with helmets, should we not equally respect muslim views that dogs are unclean?
Perhaps this should be specifically allowed in law rather than being left to individuals / councils to decide?
