The Star (Sheffield) June 13, 2007 Crackdown on taxis nets 18 vehicles EIGHTEEN taxis were taken off the road as police and licensing authorities got tough with illegal cabs plying for custom on the streets of Sheffield. Spot checks on 40 vehicles by the Vehicle Operating Standards Agency led to prohibition notices being issued to 18 taxis, after defects were found. These included a Hackney carriage with a substantial fuel leak and a private hire vehicle on which the two front tyres were so badly worn, the inner cords were showing. More minor faults discovered were for defective lights and problems with seatbelts. Four minibuses were also found to be operating without tachographs. The devices record drivers' working time to ensure they do not breach the legal limit of 12 hours behind the wheel per day, which is illegal and would make them vulnerable to fatigue.One minibus was operating without a licence. The operation was carried out on Friday and Saturday nights in Sheffield city centre, involving police, licensing authorities from Sheffield and North East Derbyshire, HM Revenue and Customs and the VOSA. PC John Scruby, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "Our objective was simply to stop the unlawful drivers and potentially unsafe vehicles from taking passengers for a ride." He added: "Although the number of vehicles prohibited appears to be a high percentage of all vehicles examined it should be noted that the police were actively stopping vehicles that had notable defects. "Obviously Friday and Saturday nights are busy times for taxi drivers and their co-operation has been greatly appreciated. ___________________________________________ |

Wha is la la land? 18 combined taxis and private hire vehicles? How many were Taxis and how many were private hire vehicles? Do us all a favour pick up your phone and ask sheffield for a breakdown. JD |

They should now be subject to drivers hours regs with records being kept but they have until 31st Dec 2007 to actually have one fitted and calibrated, law comes in 1st Jan 2008. Then the S*** will hit the fan

For every Sheffield there's a Liverpool and a Blackpool. It doesn't matter whether a council is restricted or un-restricted, if the LO is pi** poor, then the LO is pi** poor.

I'm grateful for that info Mr TB. Would that then apply to small buses as well, even if the drivers need not have PSV licenses?

But it's an easy way to score points without offering anything of substance. Or at least it looks that way to the deluded.

far from it, i think its you who as usual present the facts through your rose colored glasses. dont you say that in the free for all market that vehicle quality is better? i.e. because its free for all, thier will be a better standard of vehicles etc etc etc |

187 lives in his own dream world so riddles come easy to a simple mind like his but if my memory serves me well I recollect it was the likes of the NTA and T&G who said, services and standards were higher in restricted authorities. The wheels came off the propaganda machine when there was a spate of news articles highlighting the poor quality of vehicles in many of these restricted authorities. Regards JD |
