Public to get a say over taxi fare increases

POSSIBLE increases in taxi fares in the Daventry area will be open for public comments before any decision is made.

Daventry District Council's licensing committee agreed to put plans for a 70p increase on every journey to be put to public consultation.

The price increase would only affect licensed hackney carriages (vehicles customers can hail from the pavement), and not private hire vehicles (minicabs you have to prebook with).

Last Thursday, the committee heard that Daventry district had one of the lowest hackney carriage tariffs in the UK, coming in at 248 in a list of 377 areas.

The fee increase, if approved, would be the first in the district since 2002 and has been proposed by the Daventry Taxi Association.

It would see a journey of one mile or under costing £3.20 (up from £2.50) and a ten-mile trip coming in at £21.20 (£20.50 at the moment).

Cllr Colin Poole, chairman of the committee, said: "In view of the fuel costs levied on them in the last few years I think it's quite right for them to ask for these increases.

"They are not intending for the national average to be met. They are asking for a small increase not a massive one."
