There is a growing rebellion here in Renfrewshire (Paisley & Glasgow Airport area) amongst taxi operators being forced to switch from saloon cars to W.A.V.'s The policy was introduced here a number a years ago with drivers allowed to continue operating their saloon cars until they reached 5 years old A number of operators have already had their licences revoked & are still on the road subject to legal appeals Meeting: Regulatory Functions Board Date & Time: Tuesday 19/06/2007 10:00 Sub Board Main RENFREWSHIRE COUNCIL REGULATORY FUNCTIONS BOARD Councillors Perrie, McEwan, Provost C Lawson, Councillors Dillon, Hood, Bibby, Doig, Langlands, Mullin and Nicolson. I think the council are being a bit naughty. 
The best thing they could have done was say the vehicles needed to be WAVs when changed. Then the drivers would have had plenty of time to adjust, and in time the council would have got what they wanted. |

As I understand it the situation is the rules were introduced about 4 to 5 years ago so therefore operators have had 4 to 5 years to prepare At the same time as WAV only taxi policy was introduced vehicle age restrictions were brought in with 5 years for saloons & 8 years for WAV Hope this makes sense ! |

This condition will have to be challenged in court. I suppose all the license holders will be able to get together and pool their resources and hire a decent solicitor to act on their behalf? They are going to have to prove the condition unreasonable. It may be desirable but that doesn't necessarily make it reasonable. Skippy posted some links that may help in some way, if only to highlight the fact that Europe has considered that having all WAV compliant vehicles may discriminate against a section of the disabled who have extreme difficulty in using purpose built wheelchair accessible vehicles. At the end of the Day Europe has already laid out their blueprint for the disabled and it doesn't include 100% wav provision. What’s more Jack straw agreed the blue print. However there is a catch 22 position because even though the blueprint states mixed fleets are preferred, the policy implementation is likely to be left up to each individual country. Regards JD |

JD, after the blueprint has been ratified and rubber stamped, will owners then have the right to take any grievances to the European court if nessaccery, Jack Straw has signed the blueprint after all. hopefully things do not have to go that far and any local or high/sheriff court will see sense |
