The police comments about CCTV are interesting and it would seem from previous utterings from these quarters that practically most if not all forces are in favour of CCTV. Combined with the opinion of the DfT these two bodies make a powerful ally for the mandatory option of owners installing their own cctv. Regards JD |

'The chairman of one of the biggest taxi associations says he hears stories like that every week. So Steve Wright...' He may be a few things, but he's not that. Interesting they never took any quotes from old Flanaguff. I can't imagine why?

It would help protect drivers in theory, but I can't see many firms adopting it because it would deter a lot of one-off bookings. And it would be for the trade to implement, whereas reading the article it sounds like it's a government thing: "[The GMB and Steve Wright] are in talks with the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone to have the scheme trialled in the capital, with plans to extend to the rest of the country if it is a success." I can't see the relevance of the Mayor, except if it's going to be compulsory, but that ain't gonna happen. Any firm taking bookings could implement safeguards of the type mentioned if they wanted, but for obvious reasons they haven't (perhaps that's one reason why the Pink Ladies went belly up). And, of course, the article is clearly talking about the private and public hire trades, but the safeguards would have no relevance to public hire. |
