A SECOND-HAND fire engine used for private hire is no longer in operation after the owner was prosecuted for breaking licensing rules.

Fire 4 Hire commissioned a vehicle to be used for functions including hen parties and children's parties. The offences the owner committed included incorrect insurance and supplying alcohol without a licence. The owner was in the process of licensing the vehicle, but this was never completed.

The vehicle was observed by Harlow Council officers in conjunction with Essex Police and the owner was fined £600.

Cllr Sean Folan, chair of the council's Licensing Committee, said: "The licensing process is there to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, that suitable insurance is in place, and that the driver is a fit and proper person. The failure to hold the proper licences means that the general public using the fire engine were being put at risk."

If you believe a private hire vehicle or hackney carriage is being operated while unlicensed please contact Harlow Council 01279 446605.

That might not seem much but that's quite a high fine for such an offence.

I suspect the owner also got between 5 and 8 points on his license, if it was him driving the thing at the time of the observation.
