Brum to get new style of taxi cabs;

TRANSPORT: Firm wins battle

Edward Stephens MOTORING EDITOR

A NEW look taxi will soon be on the streets of Birmingham - vying for business alongside the Black Cabs.

The move comes after a two year battle by family firm Voyager MPV to get approval from the city council to accept its mini bus size vehicles on the city streets.

Sales manager Nigel Smart said they had broken out the champagne after getting news of the approval.

"Up to now Birmingham has been a closed shop. We have been trying for two years to get approval and are delighted to get the go-ahead.

"Birmingham is the largest authority in the country outside London for taxis so obviously it was our main target."

The company, based in Crewe, converts Nissan Primastars, Renault Traffics and Vauxhall Vivaros to full Hackney Carriage vehicle specification.

But unlike Black Cabs - which can only accommodate one wheelchair passenger - the new vehicles are large enough to carry two.

The company will now be targeting taxi drivers in a bid to convince them to switch from their traditional cabs to the company's larger mini-buses.

Mr Smart said not only were their vehicles more spacious than Black Cabs they were cheaper. Prices started from pounds 24,995 compared to the pounds 30,000 for the black cab.

Having received approval from Birmingham, Mr Smart is meeting officials from Solihull on Monday and hoping to pull off the double.
