Liverpool Daily Echo August 22, 2007, Wednesday Liverpool echo Man crushed after falling behind taxi A LIVERPOOL man died after a taxi reversed over him outside his home. Ray Hanna, 68, of Mansion Drive, Croxteth, was dropped off in a private hire taxi on June 23 after an evening at a social club. The retired labourer paid the fare and got out of the taxi. He fell behind the cab which reversed over him causing multiple injuries. Mr Hanna died in Fazakerley hospital the next day. At an inquest Liverpool coroner Andre Rebello said Mr Hanna's death had been a tragic accident. No criminal charges were brought against the driver Kevin Willis, and Mr Hanna's family thanked him for stopping after the accident and calling 999. Mr Hanna had been drinking on the night of the accident and had been helped by two people to walk to the taxi. It had been raining heavily and when Mr Hanna got out of the taxi he disappeared from view and the driver presumed he had gone inside his house. The inquest heard that Mr Hanna had fallen behind the taxi, out of the driver's view, through intoxication or because he slipped. Mr Willis checked his mirrors and saw nothing so reversed his Ford Mondeo. He felt something under the car and pulled forward and when he got out discovered Mr Hanna injured on the ground. Mr Rebello told him: "It is quite clear that you had no control over what happened. Although there will always be concern over this tragedy hopefully you will be able to get on with your life." __________________ |
