Club and pub goers could soon be catching a lift home in a new type of taxi if plans to introduce greener cabs get the green light.

Currently Norwich City Council has strict criteria for the type of vehicles it licences as Hackney Carriages, which only allows London-style taxis such as the TX4 and Metrocab. However, following an application from a taxi driver the council is now considering whether a new-style cab, the Peugeot E7 Series, could be allowed. Council bosses will now consult with the public who have until Friday, September 14 to comment on whether they want the new-look taxis on the streets. It is argued that the E7 produces lower carbon emissions and has lower running costs than the London-style taxi.

The E7 is cheaper to buy, costing £22,000 against the £30,000 charged for its rival, and it includes safety features such as ABS braking, driver's airbag and rear head restraints. Ian Streeter, senior licensing officer at the city council, said: “Because taxis are an important part of the transport system within Norwich, we are keen to hear the views of the public on the proposal to licence a different type of vehicle as a hackney carriage”.
