WOMAN RAPED IN CITY 'TAXI'
A woman has been raped in Manchester after getting into what she thought was a private hire car following a night out.
The victim, aged 20, went out last Saturday around 6pm to watch the gay Pride parade in the city centre.
On her way to go home she got in a white, five-door private hire car with black, red and yellow sticker on the side, on Sackville Street.
She gave the driver her address and he programmed it into his satellite navigation system and set off, but after several minutes the woman realised they were going the wrong way.
On an unidentified street near, or in, the Northern Quarter the driver pulled over, and raped her.
Afterwards the man said the car would not start and asked the 20-year-old to get out and push. She made sure she had her bag and phone, got out of the taxi, and ran away. The man drove off.
The offender is described as an Asian man about 25-years-old, clean-shaven, and of medium build.
Det Con Louise Henson said: ``This woman had just gone out to have fun with her friends and has ended up being violated in the most awful way.
"She thought she would get a taxi home for safety, but has instead been abused by somebody in a position to take advantage of a woman on her own.''
A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with the incident and has been bailed until 17 November 2007, pending further inquiries. end
