Youth held over taxi driver death
A teenager has been arrested in connection with the death of a taxi driver after an assault on Wearside.
Police said Raymond Quigley, 72, from Gateshead, was discovered in Beechbrooke in the Ryhope area of Sunderland early on Sunday.

He was taken to the city's Royal Hospital, but later died.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Paterson appealed for anyone with information to come forward. A 17-year-old male has been arrested.

Mr Paterson said they were pleased with the response from local residents, especially in the Beechbrooke and Stockton Road area.

He added: ""Taxi drivers have also come forward with information which may help with the investigation."

Ray was due to retire in a couple of weeks time.
The man was a gentleman and had been a driver for 25-30 years,he kept himself to himself and went about his job in a professional way.
The local paper have said that his injuries were consistent with blows.

RIP RAY, GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN.

Taxi driver death latest

A teenager arrested in connection with the death of a taxi driver has been released on bail.

The 17-year-old youth had been questioned by police after the 72 year-old cabbie died after a street attack.

A major inquiry was launched after taxi driver Raymond Quigley, believed to be just two weeks away from retirement, was found injured in the road at Beechbrooke, Ryhope.

It is understood Mr Quigley had driven his cab from Newcastle to the village in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police say Mr Quigley, of Nursery Lane, Gateshead, was then attacked at 3.30am and died in Sunderland Royal Hospital an hour later.

Forensic officers combed the black VW cab, abandoned in the middle of Waterworks Road as part of the investigation. Colleagues of the veteran driver have spoken of their shock at what happened.

Mr Quigley is understood to have started out with the former Slaters taxi company. Arthur Wilson, 52, from Fenham, Newcastle, said: "He was a genuine, nice bloke.

"I've known him for about 21 years but I thought he had retired. "He was one of the first people I ever spoke to when I became a driver.

"We were all self-employed, and when I first started I didn't know how the tax system worked, but he sat me down and explained it to me.

"He would always help out. "It's an easy job to keep doing when you get older because there is no heavy lifting or anything, but then you never know who's going to get in your car.

"I'd heard he had sold his plate and this was going to be his last weekend working." Davie Gordon, 51, from Gosforth, who used to work with Mr Quigley at Slaters, added: "He was a really nice bloke, with a nice family.

"He was a churchgoer and a real family man." Police cordoned off the homes on the Sunderland estate, built on the site of the former Ryhope Comprehensive School, as officers carried out house-to-house inquiries.

Traffic heading into neighbouring Cherry Knowle Hospital was diverted as police searched for clues. Detective Chief Inspector Mick Paterson, leading the investigation, said police were keen to speak to anyone who may have been in the area at the time.

The 17-year-old was bailed yesterday pending further inquiries and tests.

It has also been stated that Ray suffered from a heart attack after he had been assaulted.
In my eyes this is still murder as it was the assault that caused the heart attack :x :x .
I hope the scum gets a long sentence,,,,but i doubt it for some reason ](*,) ](*,) .

I think the maximum sentance for manslaughter is still life but it is not mandatory.

My one hope is that the truth comes out in the wash and the true events that happened that night are brought to light.

If that person arrested goes to court i hope he gets the maximum or near enough sentence possible.

I admit that i am bias as i knew Ray(not really well)but well enough to know that he was an old school driver who gave me a few tips 20 years ago and i still picture him at certain ranks in the town :sad:and always will.

It has taken what happened to Ray, and also reading about the other 44 deaths around the country on tdo that has really made me more aware of what threat we put ourselves into everyday.



The sad thing about this is that Ray is not here to give his version of events.
