Taxi passengers killed in collision

TWO friends died after a taxi carrying them back from a shopping trip was involved in an horrific crash involving three vehicles.

Next door neighbours Merline Ebanks, a 50-year-old carer, and Edith Haynes, a 66-year-old widow, of Douglas Davies Close, Willenhall, were on their way home from Asda in Darlaston on Friday when tragedy struck.

Mrs Haynes died at the scene.

Her neighbour - who friends said had wedding plans - was airlifted to Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham but was later certified dead.

The taxi driver, 52-year-old Muktar Miah, of Wharfedale Street, Wednesbury, remained critically ill in New Cross Hospital, Wolverhampton, after suffering multiple injuries.

His white Vauxhall Astra vehicle was in collision with a silver Mitsubishi Evo coupe whose driver, a 26-year-old Willenhall man, also remained critically ill in Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, after receiving serious head injuries.

The driver of a white Volkswagen van also involved in the accident was not believed to have been hurt.

Shocked friends of the two women said Ms Ebanks, who had a daughter and grandchildren, had planned to marry her long-term partner, Evrall Graham, later this year
