Is it legal for PH and hackney license plates to be placed in the back window of the car? I only ask because two of my mates got tickets last night by the new LO!!!

The number of persons the vehicle is licensed to carry shall be permanently affixed and exhibited at all times on the outside of the vehicle in the form of the vehicle licence plate as issued by the Council, the licence plate shall bear the words 'licensed to carry up to … passengers'.

Is it legal for PH and hackney license plates to be placed in the back window of the car? I only ask because two of my mates got tickets last night by the new LO!!!

I assume you mean Lincoln, where we have a new licensing enforcement officer, and not before time.

He has warned all operators for the last few weeks that driver badges must be worn at all times, and that plates must be displayed in the proscribed manner:

"THE CITY COUNCIL SHALL PROVIDE THE VEHICLE WITH TWO PLATES INDICATING THE PRIVATE HIRE LICENCE NUMBER OF THAT VEHICLE, THE LARGER ONE OF WHICH SHALL BE FITTED TO THE EXTERIOR (Big word, for PH drivers, it means outside) REAR OF THE VEHICLE SO AS TO BE CLEARLY VISIBLE...

and,

"THE DRIVER SHALL ENSURE THAT THE PLATES ARE KEPT IN SUCH A POSITION AND MANNER AS TO ALLOW THE NUMBER THEREON TO BE PLAINLY AND DISTINCTLY VISIBLE AT ALL TIMES"

This is the COL last updated 01/04/2000.

Any PH or Hackney driver in Lincoln who leaves themselves open to being ticketed for an offence is asking for it.

Glad to see the enforcement officer is stopping the p*sstakers at last.

I would guess your regs say something like 'must be attached to the rear', not in the back window. If they are in the vehicle the LO can't remove them if he needs too. But what a sensible LO would do is tell the lads he wants to see the vehicles in 24 hours time with the plates in the right place, not issue tickets.

Lots of drivers do it round our way and lots other drivers report them to the council every now and then there is the odd warning from the LO but he never takes action

Down here. I only ask because two of my mates got tickets last night by the new LO!!! in York plate must be fixed to the rear of vehicle, but there is an exception if the plate is a tempory issued plate from the Council until your own vehicle plate comes through from the makers, the tempory plate must not be drilled and must be placed inside the vehicle in the rear window, because it might get stolen

In Newcastle the plate must be permanently fixed to the car and magnets are not allowed.

Not sure if its law, but every set of licencing conditions I have seen requires it. Everyone knows the rule and shouldn't whinge if they get caught breaking them.
