I think its quite possible that this service might be subsidised?

Battle now is for public to use buses 24/7

BUS firm First is to be congratulated for its plan to extend 24-hour services all-year round.

We've been highly critical of the lack of adequate public transport provision for city centre revellers in the past.

There is no doubt a Subway which shuts at 11.30pm and the availability of only a handful of buses means most clubbers end up taking a taxi or a long walk.

But given the low passenger numbers using the Nightrider service launched in April, First is right to be cautious about rolling out services 24/7.

That concern highlights the key issue surrounding increased services - the fact that more still has to be done to persuade the travelling public to use them.

The likes of police, SPT and councils can play a part in this.

But any new services must be accompanied by targeted advertising, more staff with information on the streets and a real push to convince people taking a bus at night is safe.

Who in their right mind thinks traveling home late at night on a bus full of pi** heads is safe?

Yeah, but by restricting taxi availability unreasonably aren't we largely responsible for encouraging this competition?

And by not complaining when we allow councils to close all clubs at a single time, and chief constables to insist that take away food joints all close at the same time as the clubs, causing the congestion which is impossible for any taxi fleet to cater for, aren't we responsible again?

Isn't the problem that the trade "representatives" have been so involved in protecting their own narrow personal interests they've allowed our trade to be deluged with competition?

Can real effectivetive change ever be realised in our representation? Will be ever be able to effectively lobby our politicians in all our trade interests?

Our council paid £30k to the local bus company to take people home on a Friday and Saturday night bus. If they were too pi**ed the bus drivers sent them over to the rank! eusasmiles.zip
