Drunk's punchbag cab attack

A DRUNKEN man smashed a cab driver's window with a punchbag as a prank.

Benjamin John Paul Goldie, 21, of Mark Lane, Ashenhurst, Todmorden ad-mitted damage to John Price's taxi on July 21.

He also admitted breaching a suspended sentence on May 26 and June 9.

Calderdale magistrates heard Goldie was drunk at the time of the offence after drinking six cans of strong lager.

Waseem Raja, prosecuting said: "The driver had been making his way to an address in Todmorden when he was approached by Goldie who shattered the windscreen after throwing a blue sand-filled punchbag.

"He apologised and asked him not to contact the police. He admitted it was reckless.

"He said at the time he had been drunk and his action was a prank gone wrong."

Julie Brimble, representing Goldie, said: "He has apologised for his behaviour and knows it was a stupid act.

"He had been with friends and was drunk when he saw the car and stupidly threw the bag at it, not knowing the damage it would cause."

For the breach of the suspended sentence he was given a three-month community order with a curfew; for the criminal damage he was ordered to complete a 12-month community order with supervision and he must pay compensation of £214.72 for the damage.
