How many drivers are still working for less due to unscrupulous owners.
I had a new driver approach me, and he asked me if he was filling in his takings book properly, (It was one of the books that you can fill in on a daily basis)
having checked it i pointed out to him that he had worked 70 hours for less than £3.00 an hour.
I then asked him what the arrangement was and he said that it was a split bag 50/50, so i said to him do you own the car or any of the equipment he said no, i asked who pays the fuel and servicing he said the owner, I then asked him if he was told when to work he said yes to that as well. so i think I was correct in informing him that he was entitled to the minimum wage.
How many drivers are in the above predicament in the UK :?: :?: :?:
It is now time to stop this but how who do we complain to and who will listen no fecker in Government that's for sure

Too many.

But what gets my goat is when firms charge too little a rate, and it's mugs like me that have to subsidise those drivers through income support.

I care about your wife too.

I also care about you. And you're getting a raw deal.

That's the Labour way.

When drivers charge low rates I'm quite sure it's done to increase earnings rather than lessen them.

I doubt if anyone runs on reduced rates for charitable purposes.

But who is getting the increased earnings, the driver or the operator? :?

Round here many firms operate on split bag basis but don't pay tax NI on the drivers wages or VAT on the cars takings and i know of drivers who have paid NO TAX for over 8 YEARS

The inland reveue aren't interested because they know that people like that don't have money in the bank which they can confiscate i.e. they only go after the ones that have money and try and screw even more out of them

Another thing with the new minimum wage is that employees are now entitled to 20 days holiday PLUS Bank Holidaysi.e. a 20% increase in holiday entitlement

Don't know, but at the end of the day I take the view that earnings have nothing to do with fares, and earnings are down to the labour market.

Our fares are not high in the league tables, but I have no problem with them; what I do have a problem with is the amount of work.

Our fares have gone up healthily during the years, but all this has done is bring more cars into the trade, lost us customers, encouraged discounting and clogged up the ranks. Not to mention all this causing bickering within the trade and between the trade and the public.

Incorrect. Employees are entitled to 24 days annual leave and this can include Bank holidays in the calculation.

I agree that's a problem.

The problem I have was highlighted by a tw** of an operator who recently stated that due to a recession coming soon he didn't think a fare rise was warranted.

This same pr**k is on a firm that recently increased his office rent twice the rate of inflation. Image

I am making a killing on the Northern Rock shares. I bought £10,000 worth earlier this week at 132 pence each. The price is steadily going up now.
