Taxis taken off road in clampdown

22 October 2007

Officers from Pennine Road Policing Unit conducted a Operation this weekend in Partnership with Pendle Council and VOSA.
The operation focused on Hackney and private hire vehicles in the Pendle area.

Over 40 vehicles were examined with a number of serious and minor defects discovered and dealt with.

In all, 12 prohibition notices were issued - six took immediate effect with the vehicles being taken off the road for having bald tyres. The other six notices allowed the vehicles to be driven home with minor defects.

A high number of the taxis had further minor defects, including not having first-aid kits and drivers not wearing identification badges.

Pendle Council Enforcement officers temporarily suspended 11 taxi licences and police issued a number of fixed penalty notices for other offences.

Sgt Martin Bishop said: "We are very pleased with the success of this partnership operation, however, it has clearly identified that a number of taxi drivers and operators are putting the public safety at risk. One expects compliance with the basic standards.

"We are very disappointed with what we found. Further activity will be taking place to ensure such standards are met".
