Post subject:  Woman taxi driver kidnapped and robbed (Update)

A female taxi driver was abducted and robbed in the early hours of Saturday after picking up a passenger in Market Place, Grantham.

Police are appealing for help to find the man who hit the woman over the head with a bottle, stole cash and mobile phones and subjected her to a 90-minute ordeal.

When the passenger was picked up at around 1.40am he asked the taxi driver to take him to Melton Mowbray

Once they arrived in Melton she realised she had gone the wrong way down a one-way street and turned her dark blue Volvo around before pulling up on the side of the road.

The passenger got out of the car and told the woman he had dropped his money. When she got out to help him find it he hit her over the head with a glass bottle, took her car keys from her and pushed her into the back seat of the taxi.

He then drove off along the A606 to Nottingham. On the way, he stopped and demanded money. The victim, who has not been identified, told him where to find the cash box and he also took two mobile phones.

The taxi driver's ordeal ended in Wollaton, in Nottingham, where the man stopped the car and ran off with the keys. She went to the nearest house for help and the homeowner alerted police.

The woman was taken to hospital with cuts to her head and hands and she was later discharged.

Det Con Malc Mills is appealing for any information which can help find the attacker.

He said: "This was understandably a terrifying experience for this woman and this is why we're appealing for the help of people in Grantham, Melton and Nottingham to find the man responsible.

"We need to hear from anyone else who was at the taxi rank in Grantham in the early hours of Saturday, October 13. Did you stand next to this man? Did you see him getting in the taxi? Any information could be vital."

The attacker is described as white with olive skin, around 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins and stocky. He has a bald or shaven head, fat face with dark stubble and aged between 30 and 40.

He wore a black padded jacket, possibly leather, with a dark T shirt or shirt underneath, and spoke with poor English.

Information to DC Malc Mills or Pete Martin of Melton CID (Tel: 0116 222 2222) or anonymously to Crimestoppers (Tel: 0800 555 111).

Melton is well covered by cctv cameras, I wonder which street it was on and if any of the cameras picked it up? If he was picked up in Grantham at 1.40 it would be about 2.00 by the time they got to Melton. At that time on a Saturday morning most of the cabs would be at the nightclub queueing. Not much work from 1.30 till 2.30 when the club closes.

No it doesn't say much at all. From the discription I would be more inclined to think that he was from an eastern European country that is a member of the EU and as such the guy has a right to live and work in ANY European country. This does not make him an asylum seeker or illegal immigrant just another scum bag.

Well it could have implied it was an eastern european, but not an asylum seeker.

But it did imply the mush was a scumbag, so let's concentrate on that bit.

there is an unwritten rule in grotty Grantham that you don't take fares to Nottingham late at night unless prepaid and nothing iffy looking about the punters. As i mentioned on the other thread about this incident he obciously got her to go to Melton as a ruse, since he probably knew no taxi would take him to Nottingham

The CCTV only covers part of the town centre there and operates like all CCTV in this part of the world nowt recorded unless the operator in the control room (which usually covers up to 6 towns) spots something going on and presses a button to start recording otherwise its just the odd photo taken on a timer which is why whenever you ask the police for cctv evidence the reply is always the camera didn't see it !

As far as I am aware the cctv in Melton is monitored in Melton. The report in the Melton Times details the route taken by this taxi and it passed at least 3 cameras. Where the car turned around after going the wrong way up the one way street is right under one of the cameras. Would you believe it, the assult took place just out of view of one of the cameras. No doubt that even if the whole thing had been recorded, the quality of the images would not have been good enough to get a positive ID.

I doubt that will happen. We don't have capital punishment any more.
