Cabbie fined for picking up fare

Taxi driver Kashif Abbassi was fined £450 after being caught plying for hire without the necessary licence.

Abbassi was caught out in a sting operation carried out by Newcastle Borough Council and Staffordshire Police on March 9.

He pleaded guilty to plying for hire without a Hackney Carriage licence and driving without third party insurance at Newcastle Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Paul Clisby, prosecuting, said Abbassi was a licensed private hire driver, which meant he could pick up fares at pre-booked points, but he was not allowed to pick up those hailing a ride from the roadside.

As he did not have a Hackney Carriage licence, he was not insured when picking up customers who had not pre-booked.

Abbassi, who now lives at St Thomas's Road, Birmingham, but was living in Clayton at the time, pleaded with magistrates not to take his licence away.

He said: "If I lose my licence I lose everything."

Magistrates fined Abbassi £450 and ordered him to pay £100 costs. They also handed him two penalty points on his driving licence.

Four other taxi drivers have been accused of similar offences after the undercover operation. Their cases have been adjourned until October 16.
