Taxis in Gateshead may soon be fitted with CCTV cameras.

The Gateshead Hackney Drivers Association is seeking permission to fit cameras on the inside of hackney carraige and private hire vehicles.

The proposal goes before Gateshead Council next week when councillors will be asked to give it the green light.

The reqest follows concerns about attacks on drivers,allegations of drivers assaulting passengers,and problems with customers leaving vehicles without paying.

Councillors will look at whether the protection offered to drivers and passengers by CCTV cameras can be balanced against the potential infringement of passengers civil liberties.

How can the question of a passengers civil liberties come into it,when just about everywhere they have been before they get into a taxi has been recorded on camera as well .

A person leaves the house for a night out and catches a bus or train with cctv fitted.
They then walk through the city centre with cctv on every corner.
They then enter a bar/club with cctv fitted.

So why should civil liberties all of a sudden come into the decision,or do they mean that they are going to allow only a certain type of system ,possibly the one that the driver has no access to the footage.

Why has it taken so long for CCTV to get onto the council agenda? Were they waiting for someone to die?

According to Mr Taxis they seem to have good representation in Gateshead, can't understand why its taken so long

Civil liberties is practically the only excuse used by councils not to install CCTV, however according to "some" you can go ahead and install CCTV equipment without a councils permission. Could it be that Gateshead has finally woken up to the fact that they do indeed need council permission?

Why has it taken the Gateshead Cab trade so long to try and sort this issue out? Your guess is as good as mine but perhaps in the past it was a low priority and other things were higher on the agenda?

The simple solution would have been for someone to apply for cctv equipment to be fitted in their cab and when refused they could have appealed to the magistrates court. A fighting fund of a couple of grand would have covered any court costs, if the case was lost?

Reminds me of this quote made by someone from that area in 2006, in respect of getting things done in Gateshead.

At least we work with our council and get things done, as apposed to others who fight with their council and get FA.

Perhaps the representative in question thought that until now CCTV in cabs wasn't such a good idea, who knows? On the other hand, perhaps when he remarked about getting things done, he meant getting things done "eventually"?

However, I suppose the words, "better late than never" spring to mind so lets hope their wishes are granted. If councillors refuse the request then I suppose the words "working with our council to get things done" will take on a whole new meaning?

Will we see a court case if Gateshead councillors say no?

Its keeping the handle moving at a steady rate while trying to change gear thats the real challenge.

Just read in the local press that cctv has been allowed by Gateshead council.

Taxi drivers in Gateshead can opt to have CCTV cameras in their cabs to give them added protection.

Councillors approved the move after considering whether the protection offered to drivers and passengers by CCTV cameras could be balanced against the potential infringements of passengers privacy rights.

Members of Gatesheads regulatory committee yesterday agreed that the cameras would provide reassurance to both drivers and passengers.

The decision followed a request from the Gateshead Hackney Drivers Association to install cameras in their vehicles because of concerns about assaults on drivers,allegations of drivers assaulting passengers and problems with passengers leaving vehicles without paying.
